[WHO says Covid will not be eradicated like small pox](https://www.bbc.com/news/health-52814094) So this means we are in for the long haul with Covid and its variants. That's not great. But it also means that we need to take this pandemic seriously for the long term. It means that we should be planning now for the next few years and beyond. That we should be investing in health infrastructure and care workers to manage this disease as it becomes endemic. That we should be looking at other public health interventions (such as vaccination) to keep this virus from causing more harm than it needs to. I feel very torn about this news. On the one hand I feel frustrated that we can't eradicate this disease. On the other hand I'm glad that the WHO has acknowledged that this is a long-term problem and not something we can just get over in the short term. I hope that there is enough political will to act on this news and invest in our public health systems to deal with Covid as it becomes endemic. This also means that we have to start taking this pandemic seriously. This isn't just a blip or an inconvenience. This is going to be with us for the foreseeable future. So let's start acting like it.<|repo_name|>jennywrenn/website<|file_sep|>/content/2019-08-02-fun-with-spreadsheets.md Title: Fun with Spreadsheets Date: 2019-08-02 Category: Science Tags: spreadsheets Spreadsheets are one of my favourite tools. They're so simple yet powerful. And yet despite their popularity and prevalence they're not used to their full potential by most people. Which is why I love them! One of my favourite features of spreadsheets is their ability to do calculations on data in cells using formulas. They're very easy to use and you don't need any coding knowledge to use them effectively. Here's an example: Let's say you want to calculate your tax liability on your annual income. Your tax liability depends on your income bracket and your tax rate. You can create a spreadsheet with two columns - income and tax rate - where each row represents a different income bracket and its corresponding tax rate. Then you can add another column with formulas that calculate your tax liability for each income bracket based on your income and the tax rate. For example: ![Spreadsheet Example](images/spreadsheet_example.png) In this example I've added an extra column called "Tax Liability". This column contains formulas that calculate the tax liability based on the income and tax rate in each row. The formula for calculating the tax liability in each row is simply: =Income * Tax Rate So if you input your annual income into cell B5 (in this example) then the spreadsheet will automatically calculate your tax liability based on the income brackets and tax rates defined in columns A and B. You can also use spreadsheets to do more complex calculations using functions such as SUM(), AVERAGE(), MIN(), MAX(), etc. For example: ![Spreadsheet Example with Functions](images/spreadsheet_example_functions.png) In this example I've added an extra column called "Total Tax Liability". This column contains formulas that calculate the total tax liability based on all the income brackets and their corresponding tax rates. The formula for calculating the total tax liability is simply: =SUM(C5:C10) This formula adds up all the values in cells C5 through C10 (which contain the individual tax liabilities calculated using the formulas in column C). You can also use spreadsheets to do even more complex calculations using functions such as IF(), AND(), OR(), etc. For example: ![Spreadsheet Example with Complex Functions](images/spreadsheet_example_complex_functions.png) In this example I've added an extra column called "Tax Break". This column contains formulas that calculate whether or not you're eligible for a certain tax break based on your income level. The formula for calculating whether or not you're eligible for this particular tax break is: =IF(AND(B5>=50000,B5<=100000), "Eligible", "Not Eligible") This formula checks if your annual income falls within a certain range (in this case between $50k and $100k). If it does then it returns "Eligible" otherwise it returns "Not Eligible". There are many other functions available in spreadsheets that allow you to do even more complex calculations such as VLOOKUP(), HLOOKUP(), INDEX(), MATCH(), etc. Spreadsheets are an incredibly powerful tool for doing all sorts of calculations quickly and easily without having to write any code yourself! If you want to learn more about how to use spreadsheets effectively check out some online tutorials or books on the subject.<|repo_name|>jennywrenn/website<|file_sep|>/content/2020-01-07-a-walk-through-the-countryside.md Title: A Walk Through The Countryside Date: 2020-01-07 Category: Personal Tags: walking I love walking through the countryside. It's such a peaceful experience - just me and nature. No distractions from technology or people or anything else really. Just me walking along paths through fields or forests or whatever else happens to be around at that time of year. I love how different everything looks depending on what time of year it is too! In winter everything seems so stark - bare trees against grey skies - but then come spring everything comes back into life again with bright green leaves unfurling from branches and flowers popping up everywhere! Walking through these places makes me feel connected to something bigger than myself - like I'm part of something bigger than just me alone out here all by myself trying not get lost! It makes me feel like there's hope even when things seem hopeless because no matter how bad things might seem right now there will always be new life coming back around again eventually if we just keep going forward instead of giving up entirely! I also find walking through these places really calming too - like my mind gets cleared out somehow after being surrounded by all those beautiful natural sights for long enough (and maybe some fresh air helps too!). It helps me focus better afterwards too - like my brain gets reset somehow after being able to clear away all those thoughts floating around inside my head before coming back home again later later later... So yeah - walking through these places really helps me feel connected both physically AND mentally! And I think everyone should try doing something similar every now & then because who knows what kind of amazing things might happen if we just open ourselves up enough?!<|file|repo_name|>jennywrenn/website<|file_sep|>/content/2019-08-23-talking-to-a-dinosaur.md Title: Talking To A Dinosaur Date: 2019-08-23 Category: Science Tags: dinosaurs I was recently reading about how dinosaurs were discovered and named by scientists in the 1800s. It's fascinating stuff! And it got me thinking about how much has changed since then - both in terms of our understanding of dinosaurs themselves but also in terms of how we communicate with each other about science (and everything else). Here are some thoughts on talking about science (and everything else) with people who might not share your background knowledge or experience: ## Don't assume everyone knows what you're talking about When discussing scientific topics with non-scientists it's important not assume they already know everything you do! Even if they have some background knowledge on whatever topic you're discussing chances are they won't know all those little details that make up most scientific discussions so try not take anything for granted when having these conversations! ## Use simple language whenever possible When explaining scientific concepts try use simple language whenever possible instead trying sound super smart by using big words nobody understands! It might feel weird at first but trust me once people start understanding what you mean they'll appreciate being able understand what exactly going without having come up read through dictionary definition first thing before even starting conversation! ## Be patient Patience is key when talking science (or anything else) with people who don't share same level expertise/experience! Sometimes they might ask questions that seem obvious but remember everyone starts somewhere so don't get frustrated if someone doesn't immediately grasp concept being discussed just explain again using different words until finally click! ## Use analogies/metaphors Analogies/metaphors are great tools when explaining complex ideas especially when trying convey abstract concepts without resorting technical jargon! For example instead saying something like "dinosaurs evolved over millions years due selective pressures imposed environment" could instead say something like "dinosaurs were like giant puzzle pieces slowly fitting together over time until finally forming complete picture" ## Be open-minded Finally remember always stay open-minded when discussing scientific topics especially ones where there may disagreement among experts themselves! Just because someone disagrees doesn't mean they wrong necessarily just means have different opinion which could potentially lead interesting discussion! Overall remember science communication important skill everyone should strive improve upon regardless whether discussing dinosaurs evolution climate change vaccines etc!<|repo_name|>jennywrenn/website<|file_sep|>/content/2019-07-11-the-future-of-coding.md Title: The Future Of Coding Date: 2019-07-11 Category: Science Tags: coding Coding is one of those things that seems like it will always be around.
